A trip to Vermont is not complete
without a visit to Stowe, regardless of the season. Winter in Stowe
Vermont is certainly famous....the legendary skiing adventures, ice capped
mountains, deep powder, chilly nights and warm fires. But Stowe is
also noted for GREEN MOUNTAINS!!!
The lush greenery of Spring and Summer provides the perfect setting for all
kinds of activities.
Hiking!!!
The Long Trail, the first
long-distance hiking trail, stretches from Massachusetts to the Canadian
border. The Appalachian Trail also wanders through Vermont. The Green
Mountain Club, located on Route 100 in Waterbury, is the most knowledgeable
hiking group in New England.
Canoeing and kayaking!!!
Take a guided group tour with
one of Thatcher Brook Inn's partner organizations and meander down a Stowe
area river or visit nearby Lake Elmore for a leisurely paddle adventure.

Fishing!!!
Locally, the Lamoille and Winooski Rivers provide some great trout
opportunities. The section of the Winooski running through Waterbury
is known as the "trophy section". Contact the Inn for fishing guide
referrals.
Biking!!!
The Stowe Recreation Path is a great alternative to biking the open
roadways. Starting in the village of Stowe, the path winds its way
through meadows, along stream beds, beside cow pastures...all the while
within view of Mount Mansfield. If its a road trip you are looking for
....click
here for Stowe area bike trips and maps. There are numerous bike
rental and repair shops located in Stowe.
Automobile!!!
Take a trip through the "notch" ....Smuggler's Notch...once the route for
early day smugglers, later for the underground railroad of slaves and then
for illegal "moonshine" during Prohibition. The "notch road" or
Route 108 travels through a gap between Mount Mansfield and Sterling Peak.
It is too narrow and twisting for anything but cars and a courageous biker,
and only open for a brief few months from late May until the first snowfall.
The trip is a great way to see "the other side of the mountain". And
on the return trip via Route 100, pass through Johnson, Jeffersonville,
Morrisville, Stowe and back to Waterbury, stop by
Ben & Jerry's for a tour and sample of
their tasteful treats.
Whatever your interests....Stowe is
a great stop on your Vermont vacation at Thatcher Brook Inn.
